Pop (#2).

vangaalen

Pop is meek and weird.

Chad VanGaalen – Willow Tree

I love this song, I love this man.  Music is great because I can tell what kind of person he is by this song, especially because it’s the first song off his new record (Soft Airplane).  We all know the first song is often the mission statement.  The first paragraph of the essay. Shrill but shy, dark, smart, wimpy and beautiful.

The beauty of Chad VanGaalen lies in his contrasts – super poppy vocal over crispy banjo, over morbid lyrics about beaten pets, over battery powered fuzzy synth and African thumb piano.  All true.  The mid-chorus breakdown (1:27)  in this song is pure pop joy.  Sunny trumpet, clumsy clarinet, 1-2-3-4 singalongs, and that skippy hand waving feeling.

Update: I just realized I had posted this song already, so I present another one of my faves.

Chad VanGaalen – City of Electric Light

  1. This I like! This stuff hits me way harder than any Wilco ever did. I loved it about 20 seconds in.
    Where can I find it?

  2. oh yes! great sensibilities here. the simplicity, toy sounds and a warbled voice give it brightness and innocence but the composition shows real confidence.

emusic has his stuff, if you download legally.

  3. He’s on sub pop, he’s in all expected places. I was happy he was nominated for the Polaris, lots of people follow the award.

Willow Tree was the first tune that really got me into him. Then you hear a few of his choruses on this record and you are in. I feel he really builds his songs around his choruses, they’re always the biggest idea and the biggest/best focus.

Was that too musical eric ? :)

  4. haha! no man not at all, dont hold back! ever. ill figure it out and it adds a dimension to understanding music that im not familiar with!

ps. i think Fucked Up won the Polaris this year?
